Interested in the history of birthstones?  Curious about why the tradition began?515st8mdtdl-_ac_ul320_sr202320_  Wondering who were the first ones to believe in the power of crystals?

I just got a copy of The Curious Lore of Precious Stones by George Frederick Kunz and it is full of great info about gemstones and all the powers associated with them.  I found mine whilst rummaging around in a second-hand bookshop, but I’m sure you can find it online.

It makes a great gift idea…paired with a lovely handmade gemstone necklace, of course!

Birthstones differ according to culture and geographic area, so those born in October can choose from quite a few.  The Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, and Polish all have aquamarine as the stone for October, while Hindus have coral.  Modern birthstones include opals or pink tourmaline.

Pink Tourmaline is such a popular choice.  It varies in colour from pale pink to deep red and creates calming feelings that can aid meditation.  It is associated with emotions and wearing pink tourmaline is thought to help reduce stress, depression, and anxiety.  It even helps overcome heartache and some young mothers claim it can develop a strong bond with babies.indian_pink_crystal

Fine specimens of pink tourmaline are flawlessly transparent and, as they are quite rare, they can be expensive.
