Happy Birthday Aries!

Zodiac signs are fascinating because even if you don’t really believe in them, it’s hard to deny that some of the descriptions aren’t spot on.

aries zodiac necklaceThis month it’s time for Aries to celebrate their birthday and since my mum’s an aries, the zodiac necklace designed for stubborn rams has been approved by her!  Fortunately the crystals sparkle in the light and make a great substitute for Diamonds, April’s birthstone.  Ok…not sure mum agrees with that part of the design!  Don’t forget to check back for another blog post all about this gorgeous birthstone.

Aries are known to be independent, brave, and enthusiastic…definite leaders.  Does that  sound like an Aries you know?  How about these famous Aries: Robert Frost, Vivienne Westwood, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Lady Gaga.

Unbeleafable news!

Excuse the corny pun….I just had to as today is International Forests Day!

For those of you who don’t know, last year I won the #Queenof award for my line of ‘Turn Over a New Leaf’ motivational jewellery, which was inspired by the forests of Eastern Canada and long hikes in Gatineau Park.

Well, to celebrate all the forests around the world I’m working on a new collection of motivational leaf necklaces and earrings that will be available for sale on my website on Friday.  Lots of one of a kind items that are sure to sell out quickly so make sure you don’t miss them.

I love creating jewellery and honestly believe the handmade touch makes any gift that extra bit more special, so today I’d like to highlight a few of my favourite nature-inspired leaf makes by fellow talented artisans on Etsy.  With one of the Pantone colours of 2017 being ‘Greenery’ these are definitely on trend too:

My leaf jewellery is actually made out of eco-friendly recycled paperclay and I love that the finished piece of jewellery is a reflection of where the material originally came from.  These pyrography pieces hold the same concept for me, the trees of the forests burned into the wood that once grew there.  So here’s a shout out to fellow Etsy sellers in Canada and Greece, two wonderful countries that I’ve been lucky enough to live in (yes…I survived many cold Canadian winters) and visit (yes…I ate far too much Baklava while in Greece!)

As always, I have carefully selected all of the items to feature on this blog post and have received no financial compensation or incentive for including them….I simply think they’re lovely and want to support small business, talented artists, and budding entrepreneurs.

Countdown to Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day is a confusing holiday as it’s celebrated on different days around the world.  Here in the UK, Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is next weekend.

Don’t panic…there is still time to order a lovely pressie to show your mum how much she means to you.  Jewellery is always a good choice for stylish mums, and the handmade touch makes it even more special.

You’re probably wondering WHY I’m dedicating an entire post to dragonflies.

Well, I’ve always liked them.  They’re like butterflies, but somehow cooler.  Did you know they can fly up & down, forward & backward, and side to side?!  And if you’ve been on Pinterest recently, you may have noticed that dragonflies are really trending….I’ve been waiting for the rest of the world to catch up with me!

dragonfly symbolism

The dragonfly is an ancient symbol, found around the world.  It is especially strong in Native American art and legends.  Surprisingly all civilisations have attributed the same symbolism to it: the happiness you feel after undergoing a great change or transformation and finally achieving self-awareness and confidence.

If you follow my blog, you’ll know that I love gifts that are handmade and meaningful, so this dragonfly jewellery set is the perfect gift idea for anyone going through a change in their lives and needing a bit of jewellery….let’s face it, we all need some new jewellery now and then! Click here to take a peek at the charm bracelet and matching earrings. or visit the QuiddityGifts Etsy shop to see what’s available.

If you’re not a fan of jewellery, there are plenty of beautiful handmade makes featuring dragonflies.  Here are some of my favourites from talented creatives on Etsy.  There’s everything from home decor wall art, candle holders, and coaster, to fashion accessories and a colouring card.

Pisces Zodiac Gift Guide

If you follow my blog, you’ll know I’m rather interested in zodiac signs.  Do I believe in them completely?  Nope…but it is interesting how people do share certain characteristics. 1

Those born between February 19 and March 20 share the Pisces astrological zodiac sign and are known to be very easygoing.  Always looking on the positive side of life, they’ll definitely make great friends, cheering you up and motivating you to go out and have fun.

Pisces are generally a very creative bunch, with their arty side drawning them to theatre and on stage.  Like most creatives, they can be emotional and dreamy.

  • Lucky numbers are 2, 6
  • Have a happy marriage with VIRGO
  • Find great friends with SAGITTARIUS and GEMINI

Treat Yourself to Amethyst

It’s Valentine’s Day and if you’re in a loved up relationship, you’ve probably already had a whole weekend of romance.  But if you haven’t found your better half, why not avoid the hearts and flowers and treat yourself to something gorgeous?

If you follow my blog regularly, you’ll know I love handmade gifts as they always seem so much more meaningful.  And today I’d like to spotlight some of my fellow Etsy sellers and their creative makes all featuring February’s birthstone: Amethyst.

Amethyst birthstone

For those of you who don’t follow my blog on www.QuiddityGifts.com I thought you’d like to learn a little more about the February’s gorgeous Amethyst birthstone.

Poem by unknown author, first published in an advertising leaflet by Tiffany & Co. in 1870.

Gifting Amethyst

Amethyst is the birthstone of February and makes a lovely birthday present.

It is also the zodiac stone for Pisces, and associated with Virgo, Aquarius, and Capricorn.

Gifts for the 4th, 6th, and 17th wedding anniversaries typically feature Amethysts.

Amethyst used to be considered a protective amulet given to travellers before long journeys…what a lovely custom to continue today, perhaps for a student going to university or on a gap year. It would make a lovely sentiment for a new bride on her honeymoon.  Click here to order a wanderlust compass keychain.

Jewellery is a common way to gift Amethyst as it is believed it should be kept close to the body in order for the wearer to benefit from the healing powers of the crystal. For example, wearing Amethyst earrings may ease headaches and clear the mind, while a bracelet could lessen the pain of arthritis, and a necklace simply promote an overall calming feeling.

Aromatherapy jewellery that combines the healing benefits of crystals and essential oils is becoming more and more popular, with Amethyst recommended for those dealing with stressful lives in need of some relaxation and calm. Click here to view the range of aromatherapy jewellery available to purchase online.

2017: Year of the Fire Rooster

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2017 is the year of the Rooster

Check the chart below to see if you’re a rooster too:

Characteristics of Roosters:

Motivated, ambitious, hardworking, responsible, trustworthy, focused, decisive.

If you follow my blog, you’ll know I’m all about motivating people to fulfil their goals and achieve success. It’s even inspired my collection of motivational “Turn Over a New Leaf” jewellery which helped me stick to my resolutions last year, and this year too…so far!

So, although I’m not a Rooster, I think I’d get on really well with them – if you’re a rooster and want to say “hi”, I’m @QuiddityGifts on InstagramFacebookTwitter, and Pinterest

Elemental Signs

There aren’t just 12 signs of the Chinese Zodiac, as each one can be divided into different elements: water, wood, fire, earth, metal.

Each elemental Rooster displays different characteristics:

The site is full of interesting facts.  Apparently, Roosters should stay away from the colours white & green… guess they won’t be enjoying Pantone’s colour of the year in 2017 – Greenery!

Celebrate Chinese New Year

If you’re out and about in a big city this weekend, why not visit the local China Town – there’s sure to be a great celebration for Chinese New Year.

London has the largest celebration outside China with a parade and free events and activities in Chinatown and Trafalgar Square.  This year’s celebrations will take place on Sunday January 29th, from 10am to 6pm.

Gift Ideas

It’s common to give gifts of money for Chinese New Year, but I love the handmade touch so for any gift-giving occasion I turn to Etsy.  Here are some of my favourite rooster-themed makes from talented UK artisans:
